7. Sandman, 4-1. carpet – Mark Cass /John Velazquez – 9:3-1-2- $1,254,595. Sandman finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby, rising from over 15 at the age of 18.th. Trainer Mark Cass runs his horse when they’re in good shape, and Sandman makes his 10th Start with Pimlico. Sandman got off to five starts on the Derby Trail in a victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and hit the board three times. He has overbeats on the first Saturday of May as a 5-1 second choice, and could be an underlay again in Baltimore. Casse won Preakness in 2019 with War of Will. toss.
8. Also smart, 5-1. American Pharaoh – Steve Asmussen /Jose Ortiz -3:2-1-0- $198,400. Smart began his career in April 2024 when he was second in his head when he was two years old. He didn’t run again on Oak Lawn until February. He was the front-end winner with more than three lengths while still two turns against 10 fields. American Faroa’s son won again in March in four lengths at Hot Springs. Steve Asmussen has no Kentucky Derby victory, but he has earned Preakness twice with Carlin and Rachel Alexandra.
9. Gosgar, 20-1. Nyquist – Brendan Walsh /Lewis Thirds – 3:2-1-0- $292,200. Gosgar started second and second in December at the age of two at Gulfstream. He returned in February to beat 10 fields, which went into one mile. Proceeding to two turns, he became the winner of the stakes in two lengths at Lexington (G3). Live long shot.

The preakness trend says to playing against your favorites and horses. It says it will rally from behind and look beyond journalism for the winner. Being goal-oriented and smart is the best alternative to beat your favorites. When you break out of the outside, Steve Asmussen’s runners offer a small advantage. The smart one is the top pick.
