Arsenal FC expert Charles Watts has provided exclusive insight into transfer decisions at Emirates Stadium this summer.
The Gunners recently brought Andrea Berta as sports director, which led to several stories about differences in opinion between him and his manager, Mikel Arteta.
But Watts writes in his latest exclusive column Catch off sideargues that there is only collective decision-making in clubs when it comes to transferring targets.
Even if Arteta’s slight preferences were slightly preferring Benjamin Sesco and Berta would rather sign Victor Gyoker, that shouldn’t be a big deal.
Ultimately, Watts insists that Arsenal will not sign players Arteta himself doesn’t want.
Arsenal striker forwards targets under Arteta and Berta
“We’ve seen suggestions that Mikel Arteta and sports director Andrea Berta disagree with Arsenal’s prioritization targets should be this summer when it comes to new strikers,” writes Watts.
“There’s no doubt Arteta likes Benjamin Sesco, and Arsenal’s long-established RB Leipzig interest in that frontman is proof of this.
“But we know that Berta prefers Victor Gyoker since his time at Atletico Madrid, but that’s not to say that the pair is moving forward with some kind of inconsistency as we head towards the summer window.
“Arsenal won’t sign a striker that Arteta doesn’t want.
“So, even if he might prefer one over the other, if the other becomes a striker that doesn’t mean that the decision was ultimately made against Arteta’s wishes.
“He would have given it a green light.
“Berta has become a strong voice at Arsenal. His expertise and ability to get trades through the line are considered important in helping Arsenal have a little more edge in the transfer window.
“But he works with Arteta, not on him. The decisions that are made will be collective.”
Arsenal Sign – Who is Gyoker or Sesco?
Fans may have different views on this as it is not easy to know which of the two main names linked to Arsenal is actually a better striker.
Viktor | Benjamin Sesco | |
All Comp (2023/24) Goals | 43 | 18 |
Goals for all comps (2024/25) | 52 | twenty one |
total | 95 | 39 |
Clearly, the table above shows Gyoker’s much better numbers, but he plays in a weaker league and is a few years older than Sesko.
It’s hard to imagine Swedish International being able to repeat such numbers in the Premier League. This would be a big step away from the level he is currently facing in Portugal.
Sesko may definitely be better, but he may still be developing some kind of thing, and he may feel he will be better with the good players around him, as he had at Arsenal.
