The Dallas Mavericks are ready to add some form of elite talent this offseason.
Speculation quickly began to run after the Dallas Mavericks landed a top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to shock the NBA world.
The idea of pairing the consensus top pick Cooper Flag and Anthony Davis appetites with both immediate and long-term success, but the Mavericks have made them clear that they are not making a shocking move.
Armed with the league’s best trading assets, Dallas was appointed as a possible landing spot for Giannis Anteto Compo if the Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade him.
Almost anything is possible after the Mavericks trade Luka Donsic for the Los Angeles Lakers. Fans speculate that the Mavericks might hand over the flag and draft someone else, but that’s a very long shot.
Although Antetokounmpo looks like a realistic target, drafting the flag remains the most realistic outcome, as his fit next to Davis is at best questionable.
“Patrick Dumont fully understands the horse of the gift he was given and he is not going to see it in his mouth,” insider Tim McMahon said. “He understands, hey, one big business concern has emerged from the small deal they made in early February, and this reduces those concerns.”
Mavericks reportedly lost in the sale of season tickets, and Flagg offers the opportunity to recover ownership that lost revenue in the wake of a Doncic deal.
Plus, the Mavericks have no control over their future and there have been very realistic concerns about how Dallas will rebuild after the title window closes.
“He understands that he has concerns about the long-term boy, the 2027-2031 pick. How will he handle it after the last three or four-year time frame is over,” McMahon continued. “Well, getting this generation of talent is working on that. The Dallas Mavericks will draft Cooper Flag with the number one overall pick.”
Apparently, Greek freak deals are not on the table, but the other teams certainly take part in the running.
“We’ll talk a lot about Giannis’ deals. We can start that discussion like we did with the second overall pick (Spurs) last night,” he finished.
If MacMahon’s report is true and Dallas has no chance to entertain any other options other than drafting Flag, then we’ll show a bit of distrust in Harrison.
Harrison was jumping at joy when the Mavericks landed the top pick, but he was not the only decision maker. Harrison’s midseason misstep and subsequent “press conferences” rubbed ownership in the wrong way.
Most common managers preach “due diligence” even with clear options. Drafting a flag appears to be the only option, and Maverick relies on it and does not entertain the other options.
“The main factors are what he can hoop and he can play,” Roland Blackman said shortly after the draft. “The key is that there are a lot of great players in that draft class, and what’s important is seeing how we can come together and improve our team.
Blackman isn’t the one to call the shots, but Dallas fans can expect to see it once.
