Totowolf calls on Mercedes to “understand our limits” after Imola’s retreat

Toto Wolff highlights the need for Mercedes to “understand what caused our limitations” following the F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

George Russell is Imola’s Mercedes driver and finished in a disappointing 7th place.

Russell came in third and stayed there after the opening lap, but quickly struggled with the pace.

He was forced to translate into a two-stop strategy that didn’t work due to the timing of the virtual safety car and safety car.

However, Mercedes’ pace wasn’t there as Russell lost the ground to Charles Leclair.

In the end, Mercedes was the fifth-fastest team in the race and was struggling to catch up with Williams and Ferrari.

In a preview of the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, Wolf asked Mercedes to “booke right away.”

“After a tough race in Italy, we have the opportunity to bounce back quickly in Monaco,” Wolf said.

“We work quickly and efficiently to understand what has caused Imola’s limitations.

“It’s important to get above that so you can avoid repeat performance in the future.”

Strength of qualifications supports Mercedes in Monaco

Mercedes has been consistently strong on one lap this year.

Russell has not failed to qualify outside the top five in 2025.

With overtaking on Monaco’s race day, Wolff hopes their qualifying speed will give them a significant advantage this weekend.

“But we know that Monaco is a very different challenge. Qualifying is absolutely essential and that was our strength this year,” Wolf added.

“It encourages me, but it doesn’t mean anything unless I can get on track and do my job.

“We have seen how competitive Saturday is this year, and that is always more intense in Monaco.

“We must do our best to give them the opportunity to compete for good results on Sunday. The essential two stops at the Grand Prix will also add another dimension to the race. We are excited by the challenge and look forward to getting back on track.”
