The future of one of the championship’s most ambitious coaches remains unknown after another top-level opportunity slipped his fingers.
According to Bild, Danny Rohl has seen his hopes of returning to Bundesliga despite having spoken with Werder Bremen.
The German coach, still signed with Sheffield, had linked to several jobs after the 2024/25 season, including RB Leipzig and Southampton.
Touted as a possible alternative to Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Roll spoke proactively about stepping up to a Champions League-level club, telling RB Live (a outlet focused on RB Leipzig). “If both sides are sure you are the right coach, there’s no problem taking the first step…
“I’ve been involved in football for 16 years…it’s a package that gives me a lot of confidence.”
However, RB Leipzig (home to Arsenal and Manchester United’s target Xavi Simons) chose to focus elsewhere, with sports witnesses also reporting consultations with Bremen “We couldn’t achieve their goals.”
Danny Roll struggles to protect Wednesday exit
According to Build, the former Bayern Munich and Southampton assistants were among the candidates approaching after Ole Werner’s departure, but Bremen is now narrowing down options to Horst Stephen and Lucas Kwasniok.
This will bring the 35-year-old back to the market and it is likely that his previously reported preference for travel within England is still his best route.
With Southampton out of reach, attention may soon return to Hillsboro, but the duration he remains there could depend on which clubs make calls this summer.
It is a very bold move that Rohl is very public in the hunt for a step-up from the Sheffield-based club, and if rejection comes, it could be a decision to leave an egg in his face.
