Trainer Rodolph Brissett attempts stake twice Saturday at Grade 3 world record, $275,000 Aristides Stakes Royal Spa for $275,000 Shawnee Stakes (G3), part of a stakes-filled afternoon at Stephen Foster Preview Day at Churchill Downs.
Brissett Day begins with Race 6 of Winster Farm and BBN Racing World Records Return to Grade Stakes Company for Aristides of 6 Furlong. The gun runner’s 4-year-old son won Amsterdam (G2) in Saratoga at 3am and won the allowance at Churchill Downs earlier this month.
“He’s really matured now as a four-year-old,” Brissett said. “He came out of the allowance race and put in two very powerful pieces. We like what we’ve seen so far.”
The World Records drew external posts on a field of seven sprinters, including Skelly, the favorite of the 7-5 morning line.
“Skelly is very fast,” Brissett said. “We have to find out where we are. Our goal is to try and get Grade 1 with him if he’s good enough. We need to face competition like Skelly. The draw is what it is. We play from there and let us play from there. The pace before.”

In race 8, Brissett saddles the Brefni farm Royal Spa For Philly at Shawnee 1/16 miles. The 5-year-old daughter of violence enters the race from her victory in a stake in a one-mile heavenly cause at Laurel Park.
“At the Royal Spa, I tried it twice on two turns, once as a two-year-old, and again at 3am, so I need to be a little cautious,” Brissett said. “It didn’t work, but I blamed the trainer. I wasn’t very good for her. Both run her with a short break. She looks like she’s 5 now. She loved her race at Laurel last time. The gallops were solid. Racing, all in one, I think it’s the right place to try two turns.”
