The current Oklahoma City Thunder team is attracting everyone’s attention. With growth and development, the current Thunder team may be the best in franchise history.
The Oklahoma City Thunder dominated in 2025, leading to its first NBA Finals run since 2012. They are favourites to win from the start of the 2024-25 season and meet expectations.
Thunder is in good hands as there is a core of Shy Gilgaus Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams. They are a young core group of players and portend a good for their long-term future. This led to Jay Williams and others to call them the future dynasties.
The Thunder was already one of the best teams from 2023-24, but they were still pretty young. General Manager Sam Presty went to the drawings and OKC photographed Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hertenstein.
They were game-changing moves for the Thunder as they became the best teams during the regular season. They won 68 matches. This was well translated into postseason runs, including a dominant victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It was a great season, especially for Holmgren-led defense. As ESPN stands up, Jay Williams is garnering praise for the franchise as he watches this young core be with him. He compared it to a 2012 team led by Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden.
“I still think this OKC team is underrated. They definitely have a spurt dynasty vibe. There’s no drama, no flash, no superstar celebrity energy.
“The core of SGA, Chet and Jalen Williams is more complementary than KD, Russ and Harden.”
“It’s not a shot for them. It’s just a reflection based on established trust, balance and culture. It feels like a system built to last for a long time.”
Oklahoma City has a great team based on smart decisions. Gilgeous-Alexander’s trade was a master class for gaining assets. He was their best acquisition, but the draft picks were helpful too. Jalen Williams was part of the package that won a pick for the Los Angeles Clippers. Williams’ growth is impressive as he has become a secondary star player alongside Holmglen.
It’s an impressive achievement as the front office built this team. Presti did his homework to identify the right players for the system, but that’s paid off. The 2025 playoffs are not over yet, but they are an overwhelming favorite to win the title.
Even if they lose in any way in the 2025 final, Young Core will unite and compete for more championships. This is good for the team’s long-term plan as Presty wants to continue competing.
