Aljamain Sterling doesn’t understand why Sean O’Malley became such a big star.
After an affordable defeat to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 nine months ago, Fight fans were a little surprised to hear the news that “sugar” would be making an immediate rematch against the “machine” at UFC 316 inside the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Considering that Dvalishvili defeated him first, many thought O’Malley needed to win another one before he could get another crack with the 135 pound title holder. Alas, not so, many assume that the power of O’Malley’s planet landed him in the headliner this weekend.
But not everyone is sure O’Malley is as big a star as the promotion suggests.
In a recent interview with Home of Fight, Sterling offers his honest view on O’Malley’s bewildering popularity, suggesting that his character is unattractive while his fighting style is exciting.
“When he constantly asks me about my weight, or when he asks other fighters how much they are squeezing, I really don’t know his personality,” Sterling said. “It’s always been my interaction with him: ‘How heavy do you weigh now?’ So I don’t really go off very often.
“I’ve always said his personality is a bit dry. In my opinion, I didn’t really understand stardom other than his combat skills. He’s a very good fighter. He had a lot of good knockouts and highlights.
Sterling doesn’t understand Sean O’Malley’s appeal
In response to X’s above post, Sterling revealed more of his comments about O’Malley.
“Funk Master” still sounds a little salty about being cruelly koed by O’Malley a few years ago.
