Sovereignty overtakes journalism and posts an impressive Belmont Stakes victory

8 Min Read

The world of horse racing was a natural disappointment when Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott decided to present the Kentucky Derby to the Woodford Reserve winner sovereignty Bypassing Preakness’s stakes and potential triple crown bids, Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA BETS.

There is no second speculation mott after Godolphin’s Home Breed Sovereignty was pulled away from Preakness Victor Journalism in three lengths for a thrilling victory in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

157th Belmont ran in front of an exciting crowd of 46,243 on the Saratoga race course, and there was no doubt about the land’s top three-year-old. The $2 million Belmont recreates the Kentucky Derby finish as Baeza runs third in a 3½ length of journalism.

However, it should be noted that journalism, which extracted itself from Preakness’s world of trouble, is the only sophomore competing in all three classics. He probably showed that highly challenging 1 3/16 miles of tests as sovereignty, riding a patient from junior Alvarado, blew past him and poured it out with the final advancement of the 1¼ mile “Test of the Champion”.

Sovereignty, son of White Hot, became a prank and completed the Toured Force at 2:00.69. The race has dropped from the conventional half to a mile and a quarter, and it has been held in Saratoga for the second year in a row, with traditional host track Belmont Park undergoing a massive $455 million makeover.

Sovereignty began with a runner-up effort, earning his fourth victory in seven careers, becoming a clear leader in the Eclipse Award race as a leading three-year-old man in North America. The $1.2 million share of his wallet increased his career income to $4,872,800.

The results raised important questions. If sovereignty had entered Preakness, he could have met one of the toughest challenges in all sports and emerged as 14.th Triple Crown Champion?

Of course, that’s a question that can never be answered. Michael Banahan, director of Godolphin’s Bloodstock, was not trying to reduce the latest achievements of sovereignty.

“Who knows what’s going to happen. It’s the water under the bridge,” Banahan said. “All you can do is focus on your horse. That was the right thing for our horses. The horses were running hard races in the Kentucky Derby.

The decision was considered less than sport, Mott felt somewhat fronted in the outcome. “This is home. It was the race I was pointing out after the Derby and fortunately it worked,” he said. “I’m sure we’d received some criticism if he had gotten a beat today and he wasn’t running in Preakness. But it worked.”

$80.80-1 Longshot 2022 Derby winner Rich Strike has also not made its way to Preakness, so recent events have updated their discussions on whether triple crown formats should be adjusted to make time between startups.

There is no doubt that sovereignty has benefited from spending five weeks recovering from the rigour of a 1¼-mile derby.

“He came to the race in great condition and you saw what he could do,” Banahan said.

Alvarado said:

Perhaps with signs of his relative freshness and a reflection of the eight fields compared to the 19-horse Derby Calvary accusations, Sovereignty has come much closer to Belmont’s pace after meeting from far behind for a 1½-long derby score.

Mott said he didn’t expect that. I didn’t even do Alvarado. “I was a bit shocked at how close he was, but how easy he did it,” the jockey said.

The Wood Memorial Stakes presented by NYRA BETS winner Rodriguez did what he was expected of him by being trained by Hall of Fame Bob Baffert to score a mile in the opening quarter in 23.42 seconds, a half mile in 47.60 seconds, and a three-quarter of the mile at 1:12.20.

However, after he cut a mile at 1:36.70, his lead was reduced. Sovereignty and journalism were ravaging ever. Journalism bobbed at the start and carried three to four widths on the first turn before leading to the stretch. But sovereignty had too much in the tank, and the advantages of journalism were short-lived.

Rodriguez weakened and finished in fourth place. He was followed by Hill Road, Uncaged and Crudo in Heart of Honor.

Mott and Godolphin each won the second time at Belmont. Mott first appeared on the board in 2010 along with Drosselmeyer and essential quality godolphin four years ago.

Belmont continued his impressive rise for Venezuelan jockey junior Alvarado. He exploded into national prominence with the cool handling of the wishes of the late running cody, another Godolphin homebreed that blossomed on this year’s horse in 2023.

“It was surreal,” he said.

Meanwhile, trainer Michael McCarthy sounded like he couldn’t wait for a rematch with sovereignty, even in terms of time between the start. It could appear in the Draftkings Travers stakes at Saratoga in late August. You may have to wait until the Longines Breaders ‘Cup Classic, which will be held at Del Mar in early November.

McCarthy stated the following about the situation surrounding Belmont: “When a good horse takes up space between races, they are very dangerous. He (sovereignty) is a very good horse. He trains here.

“I hope everyone is happy and healthy, and we hope to see him at Del Mar.

can’t wait.
