The New York Knicks were linked to Jason Kidd as a Tom Thibodeau alternative, and were able to bring in the Dallas Mavericks.
After the most successful season of 26 years, the New York Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks have several alternatives named, but it appears that current Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is the front runner.
Kidd may be unhappy with the Mavericks after finishing his NBA career with the Knicks and swapping Luka Donsic without consulting with Kid. New York has a star-studded roster that is hoping to spend time with and boasts the largest media market in the league.
If the Knicks wanted to add a Kid, it would be hard for him to say no, and he could bring a familiar face with him in Dallas, or with him playing for him.
Behind Luka Donsic is Jason Kidd and Steve Nash two of the best point guards they’ve played for the Mavericks. They never shared a courthouse in Dallas, but they both made an All-Star Game at MAVS and were teammates for the Phoenix Suns.
Kidd is the only one to win the title, but Nash made his first two All-Star games with the Mavericks.
Nash coached Brooklyn Net for parts of three seasons and is now co-host for LeBron James. Beware of the game Podcast. JJ Redick has featured successful podcasting in his head coaching gig without experience. Nash was able to do the same and joined Kidd’s virtual staff.
“Steve is a good guy and a good coach,” Kidd said in 2022.
As Kid heads to New York, he is expected to bring in his own staff, and Nash could be a valuable addition to continuing to maximize Jalen Branson.
The famous Knicks lacked the depth to compete with the Indiana Pacers, so Thibodeau’s reluctance to play his second unit was the main reason for his firing.
Mavericks doesn’t have many free agents, but Spencer Dinwiddie becomes an unlimited free agent and is linked to the Shoddy Guard Play team.
Branson and Miles McBride were solid for the Knicks, but Kidd has a soft spot for Dinwiddy. Kyrie Irving started playing the game on him after he collapsed from an ACL injury.
Dinwiddie is a striped shooter, but it’s the type of player that a team with title hopes wants to get off the bench, and the Knicks need to reinforce that depth.
He doesn’t move a ton of needles, but it makes sense for him to chase his head coach into a larger market.
Last season, the Knicks’ bench shot a league average of 35.8% from the 3-point range, but was last killed in an attempt.
Last season, Seth Curry led the NBA by earning 45.6% of the three-pointer.
Curry played for MAVS on three separate occasions, but he only had 36 games under Kidd. Still, he’s a veteran who can contribute from the bench, hitting shots while playing off-ball alongside McBride and Dinwiddy.
Curry will have a veteran minimum contract and if the Knicks don’t re-sign their valuable Achihua, Deron Wright, Cameron Payne, or Laundry Chamett, they will have the means to sign Curry on a team-friendly short-term contract.
Kid has proven he’s willing to give his bench enough chances, so it must be a priority for New York to add pieces of depth he can trust.
Like Dinwiddie, curry didn’t play a major role, provided that the starter remained healthy, but was able to link with the old coach in the title contenders.
Jason Terry played eight seasons with the Mavericks, spending most of it with Jason Kidd.
Kidd was the only championship for the Miami Heat, thanks in large part to an average of 18 points in the 2011 final. Terry was a Dallas hero and after his playing career he took over in the Mavericks’ G League front office and then coached as an assistant in the G League, NCAA and NBA.
It’s a dream to be reunited with one of his most decorated teammates with the Knicks and they can spend the season so that Kidd’s right-hand man can set him up to eventually become the head coach.
