Man City says goodbye to one of the cult heroes this summer, but he has already been replaced by Pep Guardiola’s team.
Since his first arrival from Derby County in 2019, Scott Carson has become a heroic figure in Man City. He has only made two appearances in the six-year spell at Etihad, but has earned many honors, including a 2023 Champions League winner.
But at age 39, Carson’s days in Man City appear to be nearing the end of the day. And the club is moving quickly to ensure he’s replaced.
Man City replaces Scott Carson with Marcus Bettinelli
As reported by The Telegraph and subsequently confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Carson leaves Man City at the expiration of his contract and is replaced by Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
Bettinelli has only made one appearance of his own since joining Chelsea from rival Fulham four years ago. He moves to Man City and becomes the third choice goalkeeper behind Ederson and Stephen Ortega.
The contract to take Bettinelli to Man City is believed to be in the final stages. Transfer fees are unlikely to be paid, and the 33-year-old will be the first of at least two goalkeepers’ departures from Stamford Bridge this summer. Mike Meignan’s imminent arrival likely means that Robert Sanchez or Philip Jorgensen will depart.
It’s not the most appealing signature that Man City has the will this summer, but Bettinelli’s arrival is essential to Guardiola and his coaching staff.
