UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovsky has some ideas about how John Jones is doing himself as the UFC heavyweight champion.
As we know, John Jones currently holds gold in the heavyweight division. At the same time, Tom Aspinall is the interim heavyweight champion. Despite the fact that it makes all sense in the world for them to fight and unite the belt, it doesn’t seem like John is at all interested in making it happen. As you can imagine, this is confusing so many people.
It is undeniable that John Jones is one of the biggest fighting artists of all time. His series of works speak for itself, and while much of his hatred doesn’t want to hear it, winning a world title in two weight classes is an incredible achievement. But on equal terms, this latest saga certainly seems to be hurting his legacy.
For someone like Alexander Volkanovsky, avoiding fighting against top candidates is not an option. He has taken on the toughest mission imaginable throughout his career, and when asked about John Jones’ situation in a recent interview, he did not refrain.
Alexander Volkanovsky’s view on John Jones
“If you’re a champion, you’ll protect your belt – that’s a responsibility,” Volkanovsky said. “You can’t just sit down.
“You need to be rational and you need to fight the people there. If you have an interim champion, it’s easy.
“I don’t want to throw a shady pile, but I see, I know he’s proven himself. Everyone says, ‘Look what he did, and it’s fine’ No, not that.
“Don’t hold on to the division. I know your resume is incredible. You are considered the best ever,” added Volkanovsky. “So, if you don’t want to fight, just retire and you’re done.”
