Before receiving the Guard of Honor, Mathews also received memorabilia and plaques to mark his final test. In a brief interview on the field, the former Sri Lankan captain highlighted the overwhelming support he has received from around the world before he thanked his family and wealthy people.
“To be honest, I can’t believe the amount of love I receive from all over the world. I’m grateful for everything. I want to thank my family, my parents, my journey, my school and my university. I’m humbled by love and gratitude.
“I felt very special and realized that I had played over 100 Tests and was wearing this Sri Lankan jersey was a dream come true. I am proud to represent Sri Lanka in all forms of the game,” Matthews said.
Angelo Matthews Test Career
Angelo Matthews has retired from Test cricket as one of Sri Lanka’s most decorated cricketers. He made his Test debut in 2009 and it didn’t take long to become an integral part of the team. Mathews has played 118 tests so far, and recorded 8167 runs with the help of the 16th and 45th centuries.
only Kumar Sangakara And Mahela Jayawardene scored more test runs than he in Sri Lanka. He also led the team in 34 Tests, including a famous victory at Headingley in 2014, with a decisive knock of 160 runs in two innings.
