Norman stable house Coal war At Kentucky Derby 2025, he is about to rebound from a rough 11th place finish back to $400,000 when he returns to Grade 3 on Sunday Matt Winstakes At Churchill Downs, race trainer Ronnie Brilly hopes what he expects.
“He couldn’t do a lot of runs in the derby,” Briley said. “I think East Avenue is probably Matt Winn’s speed. I hope someone can set it up with him for a coal fight.”
Running 1 1/16 miles, Matt Winfield features five horses who competed in fourth place Kentucky Derby 151, the final Gambit. Burnham Square, 6th. East Avenue, 8th. Gold chunks, 9th. The coal battle.
“It was a really tough trip in the Derby,” Briley said. “He bouncing off pretty good on the turn and really took away the momentum he had. Luckily, he came out of the race and trained steadily in this race on Sunday.”
The coal fight tries to make a cleaner trip, but Judd Monte’s ultimate gambit tries to get a better start than his previous efforts.
The Bradcox trainee has slowly broken off the gate several times and was sent from the gate earlier this week at the start of his daily training session.
“He jumped out of there well,” said Trace Messina, assistant trainer. “Hopefully he doesn’t have that much to do in the race so he can translate it in the afternoon.”
