The upcoming Test Series, held in the UK, is Shubmangill’s first mission as India’s new Red Ball Captain. He will take over the role after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Gill already has leadership experience and led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2025 playoffs.
However, the younger skipper has the points to prove as a batsman in the UK, managing only 88 runs in the past three Tests. With Rishabh Pant as vice captain, Gill aims to break India’s long wait in the UK.
They last won the Test Series in the UK in 2007. On the final tour, India had to settle for a 2-2 draw after losing its rescheduled fifth Test.

It’s a bold move: Michael Vaughn on India’s decision to hand over the test captain to Shubman Gill
Meanwhile, former British captain Michael Vaughn has boldly made India’s decision to make 25-year-old Gill the new Test Captain. With no senior players like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli around him, Vaughan feels Gill has a huge responsibility on his shoulder.
The British believes that the young Indian captain still has much to prove, especially while playing in tough situations abroad. But Vaughn is sure Gill has the right mindset to deal with the pressure and lead the team well in the longest form of the game.
Michael said Vaughn on the Sony Sports Network: “Well, that’s official. Shubangill is the new face of India’s Test cricket and is stepping up as captain of the England series. It’s a bold move and trusts young leaders with new look teams after the retirement of giants like Rohit and Kohli.
