Josef New Garden escapes a terrifying air crash with Gateway Indy Car Round

Pensuke driver Joseph Newgarden was fortunate to have emerged unharmed from a horrifying air accident at IndyCar race at Gateway on Sunday.

When 21-year-old Louis Foster hit the wall twice, the accident was triggered on 130 laps, with the second impact causing his car to return to the race line.

New Garden was approaching at full speed and turned left in a final groove attempt to avoid the out-of-control RLL Honda, but was unable to escape contact.

The collision fired a New Garden car into the air and flipped it upside down before landing further down the truck.

Truck Marshall quickly helped him cross the barrier and helped him get the car back on the wheels.

Luckily, both drivers survived injuries. After preventive checks at the medical center, they were cleared and released.

Newgarden declined to comment, but Foster offered his views on what led to the crash.

“We were running the high line all the races,” he said. “The #45 Honda was really, really fast. I think it spent too much laps when I tried out the Highline.

“I stood up behind (David) Marca or (Santino) Ferucci (and);

“I was just in the marbles and was a complete passenger. At that point I bent the link on my toe and couldn’t stop the car from spinning there.

“It’s obviously a pretty scary effect on both me and Joseph. I’m glad he’s fine.

“It’s really annoying because we were really fast. We were really fast. It’s a shame that it had to end that way. The marble caught me.”
