George Russell was shocked to be “very close” with the McLaren duo in the Formula 1 title race

George Russell is surprised that he is “very close” to McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Rand Norris in his rankings for the 2025 F1 drivers after the Grand Prix in Canada.

Russell charged into his first victory for Mercedes in the season in Canada on Sunday.

He controlled the race from pole position to get his first F1 victory since last year’s Las Vegas.

Russell is currently 40 points behind Norris, with Norris taking another 22 points drift from Piastri in the 2025 F1 title race.

After his victory in Montreal, Russell was hoping to move further from the rankings, considering he has the “most dominant car” this season.

“I mean, to be honest, Max and I have obviously the most dominant car, so I don’t really know that Max and I are that close to these two,” Russell said.

“I think the two of us are very consistent and we get the biggest results from a weekly package. But we can’t imagine them throwing away points the way they’re doing.

“Of course, we hope that remains true, but we don’t foresee the championship fight at a pure pace, as Rand did last year.

George Russell “I’m not worried” about his contract status

Despite his grandeur, Russell still has no contract for next year.

Mercedes has not yet updated Russell in 2026.

Totowolf has insisted he wants to keep Russell on the team, but it has not yet been agreed.

Russell has recently linked to Aston Martin, and rumors have been swirling over Canada’s Grand Prix weekend.

Anyway, I’m sure Russell will be on the grid in 2026.

“It doesn’t hurt! It doesn’t hurt at all. But you know, like I’ve said many times, I’m not worried about next year at all,” Russell added.

“I know I’m going to be on the grid next year. I feel I’m driving more than ever. I still feel there are more people in the tank, I feel ready to compete for the World Championships.

“And I’m pretty relaxed, I just enjoy the moment, enjoy the race, take it every week.
