Newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Madarena has responded directly to lightweight champion Islam Makhachev’s interest in raising the division and challenging the second title.

After beating Beral Muhammad in a unanimous decision at UFC 315 in Montreal, Della Madarena tackles the possibility of facing Makhachev, saying, “Come, come, come.”

Della Maddalena recognized Makhachev’s achievements and described him as one of the best pound fighters in the sport. He said the match against Makhachev would be an important opportunity, calling it a “dream” matchup, highlighting his preparation for the challenge.

“Of course, fighting Islam is fighting dreams. Pound pound, I think I’m probably number one, perhaps second. The Australian champion also noted the importance of revenging his fellow countryman Alexander Volkanovsky’s two losses to Makhachev, saying, “(Islam) is number one in the pound one in the world, and I’m going to bring it back to Volk.”

Islam Makhach is currently hosting the UFC Lightweight Championship in October 2022 when he defeated Charles Oliveira in a submission at UFC 280 to win the lightweight title. He defended the belt against prominent enemies, including Alexander Volkanovsky, Dustin Poilier, and Renato Moicano. He is recognized for his powerful background in Combat Sambo, which won the World Championships in 2016, and for his grappling and submission skills. Makhachev trains trains under the head coach of the American Kickboxing Academy, Khavier Mendes, and works closely with former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who served as both mentor and occasional coach.
