Johann Zarco: “Stay at Honda” – Historic victory strengthens contract talks

Johann Zarco’s shocking victory at France’s MotoGP on Sunday also came at a pivotal moment in the 2026 Honda contract negotiations.

Zarco delivered a masterclass in wet conditions at Le Mans and became the first French rider to win his home grand prize since 1954.

But he also gave Honda the much needed first MotoGP victory since Alex Lyns in Kota in 2023 – he’s also riding an LCR machine.

As Zarco is already the top Honda rider in World Championship standings, Sunday’s victory added even more weight to the factory seating campaign next season.

“I’m so happy to have my second victory in MotoGP, but obviously it’s even more special to have it here,” he said, and his previous victory at Pramac Ducati was a previous victory.

“What makes me so happy is this historic line of motorcycle books about winning the French Grand Prix as a French rider.”

“And there’s Honda. Lyns came to me and said, ‘You stole Honda’s final victory from me!”

“I was kind of proud because when he told me I didn’t notice it right away.”

“I’m with Honda… it’s only a matter of time now.”

When asked directly whether Sunday’s results will help ensure a move towards the official Honda team in 2026, Zarco replied.

“Maybe! The discussion with Honda was very good, even before the victory.

“The work I do, the feelings I have with the team and the way we work, we are so happy.

“So I know I’m with Honda. We need to decide if… we’re waiting for what Honda really wants. We’re also talking clearly with Lucio.

“We also get full support from Honda on the LCR, but obviously we can give a little more wins, so let’s take a look.

“But the discussion is very positive. Now it’s only a matter of time before you know where to go.”

Zarco has finished sixth in the World Championships, 13th in Malini, Joan Mir on the 19th, and Rookie Sonkiat Chantra has not scored yet.

Honda’s factory team’s latest MOTOGP victory came from Mark Marquez, the current Ducati title leader at Misano in 2021.
