Maddalena coach thinks Garry’s focus is off

As Ian Machado Garry continues to build popularity, Jack Della Madarena is focused on being the best 170-pounder in the world, his coach says. When he appeared on Submission Radio, Ben Vickers said Garry’s desire for popularity would be his downfall (via Mmajunkie).

“We’re not going to be celebrities in this business. Jack said in his postwar speech, we just want to win the fight and be the best,” Vickers told Submission Radio. “Jack loves scratching. Jack loves training. We all love sports and the process. He can keep up with himself. He needs to focus more on finishing the fight he controls.

“He has to go to the gym to become a celebrity and stop flying around the world to understand how to get some strength and finish the fight. His time would be better to do that than trying to wind up Jack. I don’t think Jack would care. Your question.”

Maddalena’s attention is now on former UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Before UFC 315, Dana White stated that the outcome of Maddalena vs. Muhammad will determine Makhachev’s next fight. Makhachev won the Maddalena title and freed a lightweight gold to challenge the newly crafted Welterweight Champion.
