Paddy Pimblett doesn’t understand why Islamic Mahachev was forced to vacate his lightweight title, but John Jones will still parade as the heavyweight champion of the UFC.
Earlier this month, Dana White announced that Makhachev has won his 155 pound championship to challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the promotional Welterweight Crown. The news wasn’t too shocking as White had previously confirmed that everything was hinged about how things unfolded between Beral Muhammad and “JDM” at UFC 315 in Montreal.
With Della Maddalena’s victory over Muhammad, Makhachev moves to fight him, with Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliviera fighting for the lightweight title he has left at UFC 317.
Paddy Pimblett wants to see Makhachev go for champion status
In response to the news, Pinblett believes that Makachev has maintained his belt in the lightweight division and achieved more than enough to become the fifth champion champion in UFC history.
Additionally, “The Baddy” believes that if Makhachev’s four title defenses over the past 27 months were not enough to keep his money, then John Jones should not become the heavyweight champion after notching two fights in the same time.
“I don’t think they should empty Islam,” Pinblett said in an interview with TNT Sports. “If you’re emptying Islam, then (John) Jones needs to be stripped. If you’re bored after four defenses and fight people in a short period of time, you should try to become a double champion for him.”
Does Pimblett have a point, or has the UFC made the necessary business decisions by robbing Islamic Makachev’s lightweight title?
