The future is bright for Ivey and Cunningham in the backcourt, especially if the pistons can expand Ivey. Zach Lowe argues that it should be a priority, but there may be less valued expansions on the table.
The Detroit Pistons were a surprising story for the 2024-25 season. They had a 14-68 record last season and moved to a 44-38 record in the 2024-25 campaign. Cunningham and Malik Beasley were big names for outstanding performances at the end of the season.
However, people forgot about Ivy and his contributions earlier in the season. He was great as he brought dynamic options in the backcourt along with Cunningham. Ivy’s athletic ability is always a big advantage, but he paired it with an improved jump shot.

“If I’m the Pistons, I’m definitely going to Jaden Ivy and try to carry out the extension. Maybe I’ll get a small discount,” Zach Lowe said on his podcast.
“It’s like checking out my first three seasons in the NBA with broken legs. Can I go for $120 million for four years? Can I go for $100 million for four years?”
Ivy could be a piston star, but the injury is a red flag. Major lower body damage may be considered in the contract extension discussion. Ivey showed his potential in the 2024-25 season, but that might not be enough on a four-year $120 million contract.
Lowe insists that Piston should try to sign him on a cheap deal like $100 million over four years. The $25 million productive security guard is a bargain, but it reaches Ivey and his management team.
Staying in the Pistons is a good move for the younger core. Players like Cunningham and top-tier defender Orsarl Thompson are great teammates in the long run.
That doesn’t take away from the general point that Ivey deserves a long-term deal with Detroit. He got off to an inconsistent start to his career, but he showed he could hang alongside Cunningham. It should work for the future as he comes back from an injury to his leg.
